Learn, Earn, And Prosper

ReSOURCE has been a training facility for partner organizations that offer LEAP programing for years, and we are now excited to have LEAP become one of our own Job Skills Training programs! The Learn, Earn, and Prosper (LEAP) program provides youth who are blind or visually impaired, the opportunity to gain the skills needed to become independent, confident, and productive young adults.

The LEAP program is a great balance of learning new skills and enjoying all that Vermont’s outdoors has to offer in the summertime. Participants live in a dormitory setting with their peers in downtown Burlington and focus on personal life skills. During the week students each spend time working at a job placement, practicing environmentally conscious farming skills, and focusing on their professional development. The goal of this program is to increase the students’ independent living and vocational skills which will help lead to meaningful employment.

For this season’s winter retreat, LEAP students and staff attended a USABA Ski and Snowboard weekend through Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports at Pico Mountain in Killington. Students were able to try new winter sports for the first time, while practicing their networking skills amongst blind and visually impaired adults that have had similar experiences. Students described the weekend as “engaging” and “rewarding.” One student said “this weekend helped build confidence both on the slopes and with meeting new people.” We value the efforts Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports has made to help create a strong culture of trust and acceptance among the blind and visually impaired community.
