ReSOURCE YouthBuild

ReSOURCE YouthBuild

ReSOURCE YouthBuild is an alternative education program for former high school dropouts operating out of both Barre and Burlington, Vermont. Upon completion of the 10-month program, graduates will have earned their high school diploma and a number of construction trade skills and industry recognized certifications.

This February, the Barre and Burlington YouthBuild crews combined at the ReSOURCE Building Materials Center in Burlington to learn and practice extensive weatherization construction methods. The combined crews worked with each of the YouthBuild instructors as they participated in teambuilding activities and cycled through multiple weatherization skill workshops including: blower door tests and air-sealing, weather stripping, foaming in an attic, and packing cellulose.

YouthBuild students will use these skills as they weatherize the aging housing stock in our service areas. This old housing is poorly insulated and often results in drafty and dangerous homes that families struggle to heat resulting in onerous energy cost burdens in these cold and snowy communities. ReSOURCE YouthBuild provides weatherization services for low and moderate income people who do not qualify for federal or state support and cannot afford the upfront cost necessary to improve the performance of their home in terms of health, comfort and cost.

To address the needs of this population and because of the broader construction training opportunities for YouthBuild students inherent in weatherization training, ReSOURCE has made this curriculum a large part of its YouthBuild program. All students are credentialed through Home Builders Institute's Green Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training program and can earn certifications in OSHA10, Work-Keys, and First Aid & CPR training.

ReSOURCE is an approved energy efficiency service provider for Vermont Gas, Inc., Efficiency Vermont, and its community action weatherization partners, the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) and Central Vermont Community Action Council (CVCAC). CVOEO and CVCAC have also committed to hiring YouthBuild graduates onto their Weatherization Crews.
